UNREVIEW: "There was a Crooked Man" by Edward Morris

Sadly I have another unreview post from up my sleeve. “There was a Crooked Man” by Edward Morris is perhaps the work with most fail starts that I have attempted in order to get into it, because after all 100 pages can be managed in a day and it would be quite the shame to lift my hands from an interesting concept like that. I mean time traveling warrior to wreak havoc upon history after the Armageddon. What’s not to like.

However with 6 attempts to try and get into the fabric, the narrative and the flow, proved unfruitful. To me it seemed that the author here expected me to have pre-knowledge about his story and vision and didn’t take the time to slow down and make proper explanations, but hopped around instead developing his concept.

I tried hard to even read this, never mind even get to the stage of saying I liked it. I didn't get there.

Sub Jeff Noon nonsense. Oh, I could see what the author was trying to do, sure, but he missed all the targets he tried to set himself.

And the author's petulant responses in this thread didn't make me want to try again.

If you were reading the work to actually understand it, broaden your mind, or read Transgressionist literature instead of Stephenie Meyer, you might learn something.

That actually made me laugh out loud. Seriously. Oh, to be a misunderstood artist...

Edward, I'm an author and a reviewer and a publisher and my advice to you is turn the computer off and walk away. Go out drinking with a friend, or play golf or box or whatever you do to blow off steam.

Reviews are opinions and everyone is entitled to theirs - even if they write incoherent reviews. (Which I think this is. A person who cannot review well cannot read well, either, is all I took away from this review.)

Your anger isn't doing you any good. Go away. Write another book and be more happy than this reviewer. Then you win.

Just a copyright note - you may well be allowed to use the cover.
Copyright law says you are allowed to quote (brief) sections for the purposes of comment or review.
That may well apply to covers.

What astonishes me the most is that the author is under the impressiom that SFWA has anything to do with tracking "review" sites.

Ye-ah, there are several problems with these threats the author's made. I think your use of the cover falls pretty squarely into fair use. Even if it didn't, it'll cost way more for a lawsuit than said lawsuit would ever net.

I'm sure the SFWA attorney would find this threat amusing :-) I'm a writer and an attorney myself.

@ Stray: I am glad that I am not the only one and thanks for popping in on this. Much appreciated.

@ Erica: Well deserved criticism and I will remedy that.

@ Mark: I thought so too.

@ Steven & Emily: Thanks for clearing this up. Since I don't live in the USA I am not sure what exactly the SFWA does in detail.
