[What a Geek Wants] Steampunk

From Book Chick City

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted here at Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It's also an event that you can join in with too - Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own 'On My Wishlist' post. I hope you will join in! If you want to know more click here.

Me: I am also participating to a degree, but I wanted to use my own personal title 'What a Geek Wants', because this is my brilliant and idiotic at the same time product of verbal diarrhea, while editing Christina Aguilera's 'What a Girl Wants' [I grew up with pop on my country's radio and TV stations, so do not judge]
----

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

Mattie, an intelligent automaton skilled in the use of alchemy, finds herself caught in the middle of a conflict between gargoyles, the Mechanics, and the Alchemists. With the old order quickly giving way to the new, Mattie discovers powerful and dangerous secrets - secrets that can completely alter the balance of power in the city of Ayona. However, this doesn't sit well with Loharri, the Mechanic who created Mattie and still has the key to her heart - literally! A steampunk novel of romance, political intrigue, and alchemy, The Alchemy of Stone represents a new and intriguing direction by the author of the critically-acclaimed The Secret History of Moscow.

It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet.

Aleksandar Ferdinand, prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn Stormwalker and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, a girl disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She's a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With the Great War brewing, Alek's and Deryn's paths cross in the most unexpected way...taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure. One that will change both their lives forever.

Glad you are joining in Harry :)

I really like the sound of Boneshaker and it has been on my list for some time, and of course the cover is pretty special too.

Alchemy of Stone sounds interesting, haven't heard of that one before.

Have a great weekend!

I'm 85 pages into Alchemy of Stone right now. So far, I'm really enjoying it. Sedia's Secret History of Moscow was one of my favorite books last year.

@ Book Chick City: And miss the opportunity to have some generous person give me books? No way. Your selection was impressive as well, but I was pressured on time so I could not comment.

@ Kristopher: Yeah, I have heard only positive things about this novel.

@ Ah Ryan: Thanks, I like to put these is themes whenever it is possible and these books all have impressive reps.

Steampunk is a delight I have sampled rarely, but I do have an appreciation for it. :)
