Finished a Jon Snow chapter, and have just passed the 1100 page (manuscript pages, the page count in the final printed book will be different) mark on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. That’s counting only finished chapters in something close to final form. I have considerably more in partials, fragments, and roughs.
Even with just the finished portions, DANCE is now longer than A FEAST FOR CROWS and A GAME OF THRONES, and I’m closing in on A CLASH OF KINGS. I do hope I can wrap things up before I approach the 1521 page length of A STORM OF SWORDS.
Making a new run at the Meereenese knot, but maybe not tomorrow. I think I’ll hang around at the Wall a bit longer, and maybe visit Winterfell.

I feel quite guilty that I haven't read Martin's novels other than a short story that has to do with zombies. I think the title was "Meathouse Man" and was impressed. Reading all this hype about such a massive book definitely stirs some anticipation in me, but in a way to finally start his series.

I loved A Game of Thrones! That was my favorite fantasy read this year, and as you know, I'm not exactly the best at reading that genre. (Still, we can be friends, right?!) I bought the rest of the sequel, but I haven't read them yet. This spurs me onward, and I comment your nine thousand page mark. Or, something like that. ;)
I think A Game of Ice and Fire is absolutely brilliant stuff but Martin has written a lot more that worth reading. His best work may well be in short fiction. The Armageddon Rag is also a wonderful book. I always think it is a shame so many people are fixed on Martin's epic fantasy when he is a much more versatile writer than that.
@ Bellezza: Of course we are friends and our friendship transcends genres and you have nothing to worry about. I have yet to buy the first book, but I have set my eyes on educating myself.
@ Val: Yes, I know. I found Meathouse Man quite haunting and I am convinced that whatever he starts he will excel at. However he has created a titan and people will connect his name with taht titan.
This is a very well written series.
It takes everything you know about all the stereotypes of fantasy literature and twists it.
I do not want to blow the plot but it seems that chivalry is not all it is cracked up to be in practice when it comes to running an empire.
This series is a complex one with many subplots,all brilliantly executed by Mr. Martin.
Well worth a read methinks.
